Community fund distributes £15,000 in grants

ALMOST £15,000 was given out in grants at the Tameside Community Recovery Fund’s north neighbourhood event at Ashton’s 4C Community Centre.

The winners were:

Ambitions: £1,797 to host fun activities and encourage social connection, raise confidence and improve nutrition among hard-to-reach adults.

Khush Amdid: £1,600 to host vegan/vegetarian taster sessions as part of their work to improve health through diet. 

Lindley Educational Trust: £1,900 for half-day walks to Daisy Nook, a community fun day and to assist families left in need by the pandemic.

New Life Church: £2,000 to run 20 sessions to cater for adults facing challenges due to mental health, addiction, homelessness, learning difficulties and poverty.

St Gabriel’s Community Group: £1,390 to develop the area outside the church into a community garden. 

St Peter’s Community Gathering: £2,000 to enable a free community fun day to go ahead by paying for activities, a bouncy castle, food, refreshments and a face-painter.

Waterloo Park Community Garden: £2,000 to establish an area with a steel shed for tools where people can learn gardening skills and make friends to aid physical and mental health.

West African Development Association: £2,000 for cook-and-eat sessions promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Each group applying for a grant was given five minutes to make a presentation, and another five to take questions. When all the groups had finished, a vote was taken to decide on who was successful.

Organiser Terry Finn, from the Tameside Community Safety Team, said: “The afternoon went very well. At the peak we had 67 people at the 4C Centre which is a great venue.

“There were some really passionate presentations and some very useful networking took place during the breaks. It’s a really good way to allocate funding.

“I’d like to the thank the Civic Mayor of Tameside, Cllr Janet Cooper, and her Consort, Mr Dennis Fitzpatrick, not only for opening the event but for staying throughout and casting their votes. I think they enjoyed themselves along with everyone else.”

Saturday, May 21

West (Audenshaw, Denton and Droylsden): St George’s Church, Windmill Lane, Denton, (noon to 4pm).

Saturday, June 11

East (Dukinfield, Mossley and Stalybridge): The Together Centre, Birch Lane, Dukinfield, (2 to 5pm).

Saturday, June 18

South (Hyde and Longdendale): The Meeting Point, St Barnabas’s Church, Hattersley Road East, Hattersley, (noon to 4pm).
